"People call and ask if we can rearrange their rock gardens or do their front gardens," Tolge Kahl, one of the three founders of the green start-up Die Stadtgärtner, laughingly tells our podcast hosts Nadja Müller and Saravanan Sundaram in the new Consequence from "Thanks for Shopping".
Stadtgärtner are not conventional gardeners per se. The founders Jan, Derk and Torge want to use beautiful gift items to spread the word about ecology, sustainability and experiencing nature. "We want to inspire people to get out of the house, grow plants, feed animals and get back in touch with nature in this way," explains Torge, who joined the business five years ago with a background in controlling and online marketing.
The three friends started with seed bombs. These are walnut-sized balls of soil, clay and seeds, which are available in different varieties, from wild flowers to herbs and vegetables. As the demand for the ready-rolled seed bombs from their circle of friends and beyond continued to grow, the three eventually founded Die Stadtgärtner. That was eleven years ago.
Find out how their ideas have evolved, which gift items they are currently selling alongside the seed bombs and how the current economic situation has affected The City Gardeners in this episode of "Thanks for Shopping!".
